More Than a Cancer Story

This page is not just about cancer. It is about resilience, hope, healing and finding yourself again after life changes everything. Through my personal journey as a BRCA gene carrier, cancer survivor and sister, I share the lessons, challenges and practical strategies that helped me navigate some of life's most difficult moments. My hope is that these experiences will help you find strength, comfort and encouragement on your own journey.

My Cancer Journey - Insights, Hope & Practical Tips

Cancer changed my life in ways I could never have imagined. As a BRCA gene carrier, I experienced profound loss, uncertainty and fear, alongside my sisters (Seen Opposite; L to R Pauline, Me, Anne, Bernadette) as we faced a journey no family ever expects to take.

This blog is a place where I share my personal experiences with honesty, compassion and hope. Alongside my story, you'll find practical tips, coping strategies and reflections.  Whether you are facing cancer yourself, supporting a loved one, living with a genetic risk, or simply searching for strength during difficult times, I hope these articles remind you that you are not alone. Healing is rarely a straight path, but even in our darkest moments, hope, resilience and purpose can still be found.

If my journey can help make yours a little easier, then sharing it is worthwhile.

A Journey of Love, Loss and Survival

Intro

There were moments during my cancer journey when I genuinely didn't know what the future would hold. From losing two sisters to facing my own diagnosis and even waking unexpectedly during surgery – an experience that is thankfully very uncommon – the path was filled with challenges I never anticipated. Yet those experiences also taught me powerful lessons about resilience, courage and the importance of never giving up.

My cancer journey took place over fifteen years ago, but its impact remains with me today. I still carry a degree of survivor's guilt and often find myself wondering why I was fortunate enough to still be here when two of my sisters are not. Despite those feelings, I never lose sight of how grateful I am for the life I have been given.

Over the years, I have developed techniques, habits and ways of thinking that have become second nature. Rather than simply surviving, I learned how to restyle my mind – to change the way I view the world, focus on what truly matters and actively create happiness wherever I can find it. Those daily habits have helped shape the positive outlook I carry today.

In fact, I am often so positive about life that I probably get on everyone's nerves from time to time! But for me, optimism is not about pretending life is perfect; it is about choosing to focus on what is good, meaningful and possible, even when life has been difficult.

Of course, none of us know what the future holds. Should tragedy strike again, I would have to reach for my tools and coping strategies just like anyone else. But right now, I am deeply grateful. I am enjoying my life, my work, my writing and the opportunities that each new day brings.

Through this page, I hope to share not only my story, but also practical insights and mindset tools that may help you navigate your own challenges, find strength in difficult times and discover that it is never too late to reset, refocus and reinvent your life.
