Sunday Letter #1 –
The Little Moments We Remember
The school holidays have a way of slowing life down, don't they? This week I've taken a day away from work, not to do anything extraordinary, but simply to spend time with my grandsons. We headed out for ice cream, a trip to the park, lunch together and a wander around the garden centre to choose budgie accessories. Next week, one very excited little boy will be welcoming his very first budgie.
As we sat together over lunch, I happened to glance down. His young hand was resting so naturally on mine.
I took a photograph.
When I looked at it later, I was thinking how old my hand looks compared to his smooth young one - then it struck me that the photograph wasn't really about coffee or lunch at all. It was about two hands. One small hand, full of adventures still waiting to happen. One hand that has lived through decades of joy, heartbreak, mistakes, lessons and love.
For a few quiet moments, those two hands were simply together. And I found myself thinking that perhaps this is what life is really about.
Not the big milestones we spend years chasing... But these ordinary moments that quietly become the memories we treasure most.
🌿 This Week's Thought
Sometimes the moments that shape us aren't the grand celebrations or major milestones. They're the quiet moments that arrive without fanfare, a child's hand resting on yours, a shared smile, a simple conversation over coffee. They remind us that a meaningful life isn't measured by extraordinary achievements, but by the love, presence and connection we choose to notice every day.
✍️ Behind the Pages
One of the things I love most about writing is how inspiration often comes from the most unexpected places.
This week, I've been thinking about The Choices That Change Us, my latest novel. Although much of the story is set in the beautiful coastal landscapes of Nova Scotia, its heart began much closer to home.
While the characters are inspired by the real Liz and Katie that many of us know from Green Hammerton Post Office & Café, the story itself is entirely fictional.
I'm incredibly grateful to them for allowing me to include them in my novel and to Green Hammerton Café for giving my books a little home in the village where this story begins.
The Café has become a special place for me. It's where conversations are shared over coffee, friendships grow, and ordinary moments quietly become memories. That warm, welcoming atmosphere inspired many of the scenes in my novel and reminds me that every community has stories waiting to be told.
Sometimes the places we visit every day shape our lives far more than we realise.
