Navigating Breast Cancer - Insights, Hope & Practical Tips

A breast cancer diagnosis can change your life in ways you could never imagine. It can bring fear, uncertainty, loss and countless questions about the future. As a BRCA gene carrier and breast cancer survivor, I experienced many of these challenges firsthand alongside my sisters (pictured opposite: Pauline, Jane, Anne and Bernadette) as we faced a journey no family ever expects to take.

This page is dedicated to supporting those navigating breast cancer, living with a genetic risk, recovering after treatment, or caring for a loved one affected by cancer. Drawing on both my personal experiences and professional background, I share practical advice, coping strategies, reflections and lessons learned along the way.

I hope that these articles provide reassurance, encouragement and hope during difficult times. While every cancer journey is unique, you do not have to face it alone. Healing is rarely a straight path, but even in life's darkest moments, strength, resilience and purpose can still be found.

If my experiences can help make your journey a little easier, then sharing them is worthwhile.

A Journey of Love, Loss and Survival

Intro

There were moments during my cancer journey when I genuinely didn't know what the future would hold. From losing two sisters to facing my own diagnosis and even waking unexpectedly during surgery – an experience that is thankfully very uncommon – the path was filled with challenges I never anticipated. Yet those experiences also taught me powerful lessons about resilience, courage and the importance of never giving up.

My cancer journey took place over fifteen years ago, but its impact remains with me today. I still carry a degree of survivor's guilt and often find myself wondering why I was fortunate enough to still be here when two of my sisters are not. Despite those feelings, I never lose sight of how grateful I am for the life I have been given.

Over the years, I have developed techniques, habits and ways of thinking that have become second nature. Rather than simply surviving, I learned how to restyle my mind – to change the way I view the world, focus on what truly matters and actively create happiness wherever I can find it. Those daily habits have helped shape the positive outlook I carry today.

For me, optimism is not about pretending life is perfect; it is about choosing to focus on what is good, meaningful and possible, even when life has been difficult.

Of course, none of us know what the future holds. Should tragedy strike again, I would have to reach for my tools and coping strategies just like anyone else. But right now, I am deeply grateful. I am enjoying my life, my work, my writing and the opportunities that each new day brings.

Through this page, I hope to share practical insights and mindset tools that may help you navigate your own challenges, find strength in difficult times and discover that it is never too late to reset, refocus and reinvent your life.
