A Lifetime of Resetting, Refocusing and Reinventing

Published on 24 June 2026 at 11:28

I've been resetting, refocusing and reinventing myself for years. Long before Facebook, TikTok and motivational quotes became popular.  Reset, Refocus, Reinvent is bigger than a slogan for me. It's a philosophy I've lived by for decades.

Life changes.

Circumstances change.

We change.

I've reinvented myself more times than I can count. Sometimes by choice, sometimes because life gave me no alternative.

I've been a pharmaceutical professional, psychotherapist, cancer survivor, author, wife, mother, and now learning to be a content creator sharing the lessons I've learned along the way.

What I've discovered is this:

Reinvention isn't about becoming someone new.

It's about rediscovering who you are beneath the fear, doubt, setbacks and expectations, and finding a way to rise above them. It's about creating your own version of human armour, learning how to fight back, and ultimately standing proud in the person you have become.

After my cancer treatment, I was not the same person - physically, mentally or emotionally. I found myself grieving the woman I used to be. The life I had known had changed, and so had I.

It took me a while to realise that the person I was mourning belonged to a different chapter of my life. This was a new era, and I had a choice: remain trapped in the past or learn to embrace the person I had become.

It wasn't easy. There were days when I felt lost, uncertain and disconnected from myself. But in many ways, I was fortunate. As a psychotherapist, I already had the tools. For years, I had guided others through adversity, helping them rebuild their confidence, resilience and sense of self. Now it was time to practise what I had been teaching.

That realisation became a turning point.

Slowly, I began rebuilding, not by trying to become the person I once was, but by creating a new version of myself. A version shaped by experience, strengthened by adversity and determined not merely to survive, but to live fully.

During this period, I also discovered the therapeutic power of writing. Putting thoughts and emotions onto paper became part of my healing process. It helped me make sense of my experiences and find meaning in circumstances I could never have chosen.

Click the button below to read an extract from the journal I kept during my recovery. It captures the moment I stopped focusing on what I had lost and started focusing on what I could still become.

The extract takes me back to a pivotal moment in my life.

The turning point when I realised that if I wanted things to change, I had to change too. It was the moment I stopped focusing on what I had lost and started focusing on what I could still become.

It wasn't a dramatic overnight transformation. It was a decision. A decision to take responsibility for my future, to rebuild my confidence, to embrace the person I had become, and to create a life that was no longer defined solely by cancer and loss.

The extract became part of a book I wrote way back during my recovery.  It is not featured in my current book collection, but it can still be found on Amazon. (The Gateway To Happiness Begins With Being Self Aware: 7 tips for a happy life by  AmouraJ Kellett.)

The pen name itself holds special significance.

"Am" represented my sister, Anne Marie, whom I lost to cancer while I was recovering from my own diagnosis.

"Amour" is the French word for love.

And "J Kellett" is, of course, me.

Together, the name became a tribute to love, loss, resilience and hope. A reminder that even in life's darkest moments, we can still find a way forward.

So, if you're ready to be beYOUtiful, perhaps it's time to pause and ask yourself a simple question:

What needs to change?

Not tomorrow.
Not next year.
Not when the circumstances are perfect.

Now.

Because the life you want begins with the choices you make today.

It begins with self-awareness, self-belief and the courage to take that first step, however small it may seem.

Your setbacks, your losses or your fears do not define you. You are defined by how you rise above them.

And remember, it's never too late to reset, refocus and reinvent yourself.

So, if you're ready to be beYOUtiful, let's begin.

You don't need a new year.

You don't need permission.

You don't need to be younger.

You can reset, refocus and reinvent yourself at any stage of life.

The most exciting chapter of your life may still be waiting to be written.
